This is why you should try to obey the letter of the law and the spirit. Especially on an expensive thing like a vehicle recall. Sit down, shut up, and get it dealt with. If you’re going to be smartass about it, you should expect to get your lumps.

I bet he could never pass a state o spection like that. If I were VW I would say it’s not legal to drive on the road there fore it would need to be towed and violates the agreement

Exactly.
I admit I giggled a little at the thought of stripping the car like that, but there’s no way my conscience would let me do that.
...unless I knew for a fact that the car was destined for the crusher or something.

Even if I knew it was fated for the crusher, why mess with the legal troubles? Just hand it off as is, take the money, and thank the gods that you’re getting a decent enough amount back for a car that odds are will never see the road again.

Well, that’s been the question recently: would there even be legal troubles? I’m starting to wonder if this Mayer guy used this opportunity as an experiment in order to get a final answer about whether stripping the car was ok or not. He’s not the first to come up with the idea, but his participation in the matter seems to have been getting more publicity than others. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I’ve noticed any time the word “would” shows up anywhere near the term “legal issues” that the answer is frequently yes.

I don’t care about the car itself, as VW did it to themselves and are the only victim of this guy, and can get bent for being liars, and are also a corporation with no feelings to defend.
What I do care about, is that this guy publicized himself exploiting a legal loophole. That is a terrible, terrible idea if you want your exploit to go through.
My guess is that the author and mister John Mayer (I know it’s Joe) knew that this would be a likely followup story to get doz mad clicks, yo.

They are either going to the crusher, going to a scrapper, or going to a country with looser emissions regs.

Good, that was BS. We have so many clients who just want this done and are agonizing over it. One of those cars has been on my lot for months as VW keeps kicking the can down the road on her turn-in date, because its injection pump is dismantling itself and it will only run long enough to get to the dealer and meet the “operable” clause. Then there’s this guy, being a dick about it.

I just can’t believe someone would have so much time on their hands that they could waste time on such an endeavor. Best case scenario is you wasted hours for VW to give you what they were already going to give you. Worse case is you’re stuck with a worthless car.

This is why some idiots need to be told not to drink brake fluid, etc... because someone will do it and then say, ‘it never said anywhere in the manual not to do so’.

Seriously, look at all the warnings for this bike. There are about 100 warnings and cautions. Most are so obvious I half expect the sentence to be finished with, ‘duh!’.
! WARNING Engine coolant is harmful or fatal if swallowed or inhaled. Do not drink anti-freeze or coolant solution . If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Immediately contact a poison control center or a physician. Avoid inhaling mist or hot vapors; if inhaled, remove to fresh air. If coolant gets in eyes, flush eyes with water and seek medical attention. Wash thoroughly after handing. Solution can be poisonous to animals. Keep out of the reach of children and animals.

He’ll know doubt try and sue Jalopnik or the initial poster for loss of earnings for the money he would of got from selling the individual parts and the cost of the ‘buy back’ for the whole vehicle.

What “experiment?” “being an absolute dick” is not “running a social experiment” no matter what those YouTube and instagram jerks say.

No, I don’t mean a social experiment. I’m just tossing around the idea that with all this talk about stripping the cars lately, maybe he decided that he would take his to the extreme and see what VW says about it so that he could share the results before people get carried away.
There’s been some speculation over the past few days about it, and the way that his case is getting more publicity than others gives him an opportunity to find out and share whether or not this is even an option. It would sure be a waste to see all these salvageable parts go to waste, especially if VW ends up taking these cars to the crusher.
Last I read, he’s pursing legal advice about his car being declined. I wonder if he will pursue this from the letter of the law angle, or if he’ll just end up dropping it and put some (or all?) of the parts back on.
